Travel
is fun, and with a little planning, extra
time and some common sense, it can be a real
pleasure. Q. How Safe Is Travel ? A. Usually very safe. Over the 30 years that we have traveled all over North America and Europe as well as other parts of the world, we have never been in danger. Stay in the (day) light and close to people, and you'll be alright. Fear comes from TV and books, usually dramatized. If you feel safer take along some spray, but use only in extreme situations. Q. How do we know the area we are in ? A. Try to obtain detailed, new Maps. It's good to know where you are when in a foreign country. So, to have a detailed map of recent date can be very helpful. Contact the Tourist Office of your destination, the Car Rental Agency or AAA, if you are a member. Some local maps have valuable coupons and information on discounted venues, you may want to attend. Q. What about Telephone Service Overseas ? A. We are all used to cell phone convenience. But unless it is programmed for international service, my chip is $9.99 extra a month, it pays to buy a Calling Card for E 20. to use at the public phone and call. It is transferable and shows how much is being used and left on the card. Q. What car should we rent for Vacation ? A. It's as much a question of need as well as price. For two people with luggage for two weeks a mid-sized car may do. Make sure all you luggage fits in the trunk for security reasons. A family usually needs a large car or van. Children need some space to move around. Good judgment is the kind of family car you drive. Stick shift is much cheaper than automatic, A/C is an expensive option. Place your car rental order early and watch for specials. Add at least 20 % to the quoted price for taxes, fees, etc. The car is still a wonderful way to travel. Q. How do you make travel fun and transfers bearable? A. Consider, first of all, that the travel, getting there, is part of your vacation. Then start early and allow plenty of time to get to the airport or terminal at least two hours ahead of schedule. Use the time to have a bite to eat or a cocktail, catch up on some reading, talk to another traveler or just watch people. Q. What are some things to consider when packing for our trip? A. Pack smart and Small. We like to take our suitcase on board, so they are small and fit right into the overhead bins. I usually decide on light or dark attire. Shoes especially take a lot of space. Color coordinate for the destination, length of trip and your planned activities. Some people leave things behind to make room for souvenirs. Ocean cruises are different as you need several changes. Q. What is a valid passport? A. Be sure your passport is valid, i.e. It should have 6 months before it expires. You may also want to update your picture from time to time. Have a photo copy of your passport elsewhere in your luggage. Guard it well, a passport is worth a lot in international circles Q. How much cash should I take? A. We don't take much and use our credit card for all purchases. Cash is for tips, $1.00 each, for cabs, and other small items like the paper or coffee, etc.. We always change all we want to take for a better rate here at an American Express office. Smaller denominations are more practical. Q. What is the best Camera to use? A. Unless you are a photo expert, who uses sophisticated cameras with special lenses, always sets up on a tripod and adjust the light and color with filters - you should consider a small, robust and easy to understand and handle camera, always ready to shoot. On my travels I use an automatic digital Canon Power Shot SD1000 in a leather case for protection and wear on my belt. It provides us with many memorable snapshots of action, people and landmarks because it is easy to use. You can hand it to a by-stander and include yourself in the pictures. Just say "Press Here - and what you see is what you get". Make sure you use the flash in sunlight to minimize hard shadows. And in the evening charge your battery. Your chip probably has hundreds of pictures to shoot, but the battery usually needs a boost. Always carry a spare battery, it can be a real plus. Q. What is the best way to figure out where to travel to? A. Looking up on the internet to compare destinations, features, and pricing brings out the best (in us?). But let's not forget that planning and working with a live travel expert has many advantages and adds value to your tour. Generally speaking, the travel industry, i.e. Travel Agents, Tour Operators, Hotel and Hospitality Providers, etc. Have adjusted well to the challenge. Once you have found a good Travel Counselor, don't let go. They not only advise you on travel features, destinations and hot spots, but keep you safe and secure from unknowing danger, delays and being stranded. Just like you trust your doctor or your driver, have peace of mind with a travel friend in your corner and enjoy the trip. |
